Theory is a catch-all phrase for a collection of ideas that have some degree of provability. They are hypotheses that have been tested, tweaked, experimented with and developed over time. Matured thoughts, strategies and concepts that are ready for wider implementation.
For anyone with an interest in people and the human condition, gaining an understanding of counselling and psychotherapeutic theory will enrich your life, strengthen your relationships, and elevate your capacity to listen and support your community.
Helping others
No matter how empathetic you might be (Read: The Difference Between Empathy and Sympathy), it can be challenging to relate to experiences outside of your awareness. Even experiences within your awareness may affect people in different ways; folk respond in ways unique to themselves.
When it’s not possible to connect through shared experience, lean on theory. Learn about concepts and different ways of thinking. Expand your awareness. Develop a toolkit of insight and understanding and it just might help you help someone else.
Self-awareness
Discovering different theories naturally develops a greater awareness of self – and therefore growth – as you recognise yourself or people you know in your learning.
The more we are able to (gently!) pull these threads, the more we able able to implement change that may result in a new closeness with those around you.
As I embark on my Level 3 Counselling training, I look forward to having a much better grasp of different thinkers. I am comforted by the idea that not one size fits all, and that there is space for adaptability and personalisation in each individual therapist’s approach.
I’m feeling inspired to write again as I learn about new concepts and theories through the training. It’s a helpful way for me to process new ideas, although I’m putting no stress or expectation on myself to deliver weekly (or even monthly!). Bear with…
Recently I’ve been listening to Say More with Dr? Sheila, a parody podcast with some very silly improvised sessions with Amy Poehler and special guests. I’ve been watching Shrinking on Apple TV with Jason Segal and Harrison Ford which has been surprisingly moving at times. I’m on the lookout for book recommendations (theory-related) — please drop me a comment if you have any!
It’s nice to be back… I think…
